Tustin Pounds Trabuco Hills in Division III
TUSTIN — It took only two innings for Trabuco Hills to realize its playoff run would be a short one.
With Tim Wilson’s grand slam highlighting an 11-run second inning, Tustin crushed the Mustangs, 14-3, in a Division III wild-card baseball game Tuesday at Tustin.
Tustin, the third-place team from the Sea View League, advanced to a first-round game at 3:15 p.m. Friday against host Kennedy, the Garden Grove League champion.
Trabuco Hills (11-12-1) finished third in the Pacific Coast League.
Tustin (17-9-1) broke a 1-1 tie in the second by taking advantage of two Mustang errors and scoring seven runs before Wilson’s first homer this season. Ryan Winmill drove in three runs and scored one. The Tillers sent 13 batters to the plate; all nine players scored or drove in at least one run.
“I didn’t see a blowout coming, but I knew we’d play well,” Tustin Coach Tim O’Donoghue said.
Wilson (5-4) combined with relievers Brian Helsper and Justin Lloyd for a four-hitter. Craig Smith (6-5), who lasted 1 1/3 innings, took the loss.
