NATIONAL LEAGUE ROUNDUP : Giants Beat Astros, Bonds Keeps Rolling
Along with everyone else, the Houston Astros haven’t figured out how to cool off Barry Bonds, either.
Bonds tied the score with a two-run homer in the seventh inning and Robby Thompson hit a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning at San Francisco as the Giants beat the Astros, 8-7, Monday.
“We’re going to have to learn how to pitch to him,” Astro third baseman Ken Caminiti said of Bonds, “or else walk him four times.”
After Dave Burba (3-2) retired the side in the top of the 10th, Manwaring led off with a single against Doug Jones (1-2) and moved to third one out later.
Thompson followed with a fly-ball out to score Manwaring and give the Giants their sixth victory in seven games.
Jeff Bagwell’s three-run homer in the top of the seventh inning gave the Astros a 7-5 lead. But Bonds’ two-run homer against Xavier Hernandez in the bottom of the inning tied the score for his National League-leading 35th run batted in.
Matt Williams hit his major league-leading 13th homer with a runner on base in the third.
San Diego 4, Colorado 0--Andy Benes pitched a three-hitter and started the winning sixth-inning rally with a double at San Diego to extend the expansion Rockies’ longest losing streak to seven games.
Rockies left-hander Butch Henry (2-4) gave up one hit through five scoreless innings before being knocked out on five consecutive hits in the sixth.
Benes (6-3) continued his role as the Padres’ stopper’s role by ending a two-game losing streak. All of his victories have followed losses. He tallied his fourth career shutout and San Diego’s first of the season by striking out seven and walking two.
Philadelphia 10, Florida 3--John Kruk had a career-high five hits and three Philadelphia pitchers stranded 17 runners to lift the Phillies at Miami.
The Marlins left 10 runners in scoring position, hit into a double play and had a runner thrown out at third. The 17 left on base was one shy of tying the NL record for a nine-inning game.
Starter Ben Rivera (2-2) struggled through five innings for the victory.
Florida starter Charlie Hough (2-4) gave up six hits and five runs in four innings.
Pittsburgh 9, New York 4--Randy Tomlin stopped the Mets again, beating Dwight Gooden at New York.
Tomlin (2-4) improved to 9-0 lifetime with a 2.05 ERA against the Mets. He won despite leaving during the sixth inning because of tightness in his left elbow.
The Mets have lost four in a row, seven of eight and 17 of 21. Gooden (4-4) gave up three runs in the first inning and the Mets trailed the rest of the way.
Atlanta 5, Montreal 2--Steve Avery, 0-4 lifetime against Montreal, gave up two runs in 5 2/3 innings to help the Braves past the Expos at Atlanta.
Avery (3-2) gave up four hits, walked one and struck out four. Mike Stanton got the last three outs for his major league-leading 16th save.
Sid Bream drove in two runs with a double for the Braves.
Atlanta got nine hits and five runs against Dennis Martinez (2-5) in five innings.
