JUNIOR COLLEGE BASEBALL SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA REGIONALS : Pierce, Canyons, Mission Fall by Wayside

Faced with having to sweep a doubleheader Sunday to remain alive in the Southern California junior college baseball regionals, Pierce College got only half the job done and was eliminated by host Harbor in the best-of-three series.

The Brahmas beat Harbor, 9-6, in the first game and lost, 15-11, in the second game. Harbor, seeded No. 3 in the regionals, defeated the 14th-seeded Brahmas, 18-5, Saturday.

Pierce (23-17) took advantage of a six-run third inning to win the first game Sunday. The key hits were a two-run single by Kevin Milligan, a three-run home run by Brian Basowski and a solo homer by Adam Pearlman. Chris Frith-Smith preserved the victory for Steve Pack (7-3) by working 3 2/3 scoreless innings for his seventh save.

The Brahmas got three runs batted in each from Josh Smaler and Louis Tapia, and a home run and two RBIs by Jason Cohen, in the second game. Smaler had four hits and and finished with eight in 12 at-bats in the three-game series. Tristen Paul had two homers for Harbor (30-11).

Long Beach City 9, Canyons 8--Second baseman Adam Quinn hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to help the Vikings (21-18) eliminate host Canyons (29-10) in the best-of-three series. Long Beach won Saturday, 9-2.

Canyons, seeded No. 2 in the regional, led, 8-4, in the sixth before the 15th-seeded Vikings scored five runs. Third baseman Ted Kiester smashed a three-run homer in a six-run fourth for Canyons and right-fielder John Davis added a solo shot in the fifth to give the Cougars the four-run cushion. Right-hander R.J. Simone suffered his first loss in 10 decisions.

Chaffey 12, Mission 6--The host Panthers scored six runs in the top of the ninth en route to sweeping the series. Chaffey beat Mission, 2-1, Saturday. Mission (25-15), seeded 13th, took a 3-0 lead in the first, but Chaffey (32-10) rallied for four in the fourth. The Free Spirit tied it, 4-4, in the bottom half, but Chaffey scored single runs in the fifth and seventh.
