Prep Playoffs at a Glance : SOUTHERN SECTION TEAM GOLF FINALS
* Today’s schedule: Fifteen teams tee off at 7:30 a.m. at the Sandpiper Golf Course in Goleta. Each team has six players; the top five scores are totaled.
* Last year’s finish: 1. Palm Desert, 379; 2. Huntington Beach, 382; 3. Santa Margarita, 385; 4. Trabuco Hills, 386.
* Outlook: Palm Desert appears to be the overwhelming favorite to win its second consecutive title. The Aztecs, who have four of the six players from last year’s team, won the Eastern Regional by 38 strokes, despite about 15 penalty strokes on the narrow Indian Palms Country Club course in Indio. They had four players in the 70s, including medalist Mike Walton, who shot one-under-par 71. Mission Viejo Trabuco Hills also has an experienced team, with four players back from the six who won the CIF-SCGA team championship last season. The Mustangs, whose only dual-match loss of the season came against Palm Desert, tied for first with Santa Margarita in the Southern Regional. Westlake Village Westlake and Newhall Hart each won regionals handily with young teams made up of two freshmen, three sophomores and a senior. Long Beach Wilson, which won the Central Regional, has five players who consistently shoot in the 70s. Ventura Buena and Santa Barbara San Marcos, Channel League members that finished second and third to Westlake in the Northern Regional, have the advantage of being familiar with the 7,200-yard Sandpiper course.
