GOLF ROUNDUP : Mayfair Shoots a 61, but Forsman Has Lead
Billy Mayfair shot a 61 on Friday, the 11th-best score in the history of the PGA Tour, in the Byron Nelson Classic at Irving, Tex.
But Mayfair’s nine-under-par round, which included a bogey, was only the centerpiece of an exceptional scoring assault on the TPC at Las Colinas and left him tied for third, three shots back of leader Dan Forsman at the tournament’s halfway point.
Forsman added a 64, not exceptionally low in the remarkable scoring exploits recorded in ideal conditions, to his opening 65 for a 36-hole score of 129, which is 11 under par, a course record and equal to the low two-round total on the tour this year.
Mayfair’s effort was even more outstanding. The last time that score was bettered was in 1991, when Chip Beck shot a record-matching 59 at Las Vegas.

Tom Weiskopf and Kermit Zarley, the newest members of the Senior PGA Tour, birdied their final holes to finish with five-under-par 67s and share the lead in the PaineWebber Invitational at Charlotte, N.C.
Weiskopf hasn’t won an official tournament on the senior tour this season, though he won his first competition as a senior, the Chrysler Cup.

Laura Davies, the power hitter from England, and steady Gail Graham of Canada each shot 69 to remain tied for the lead in the LPGA McDonald’s Championship at Wilmington, Del.
