Continuum, according to its motto, is “dedicated to learning and extending the jazz tradition without being bound by it.” On Saturday, the fusion jazz group will put that message to music in a benefit concert in Wilmington.
The concert at Harbor College, to raise money for the college’s jazz program, will include special guest John
Bergamo, a percussionist who has performed with musicians ranging from John McLaughlin to Frank Zappa. Continuum consists of Steve Billman on bass, Craig Ochikubo on piano and synthesizers, Chris Garcia on drums and Andy Suzuki on tenor and soprano saxophones.
Compositions by Continuum members include “But Then Again,” “Delightful Reassurance” and “Inspiration” by Billman; “Choose to Love” and “Nascent” by Ochikubo; “As of Yet” and “Early Morning Shadows” by Garcia; and “Garuda” and “Maskable” by Suzuki. The group also has made its own arrangements of music by John Coltrane, Chick Corea, John McLaughlin, Pat Metheny and Thelonious Monk, among other artists.
Chris Lira, Continuum’s publicist, says the group plays a wide range of music, including funk and rock. Unlike other “fusion groups,” he says, Continuum has a strong grounding in jazz. “Most fusion bands don’t play jazz . . . they play basically R & B with a sax melody on top,” Lira said. “These guys are steeped in jazz.”
