Ventura College’s Muncy Accepts Baseball Scholarship From Texas Tech

Mike Muncy, an infielder who set two school records at Ventura College this season, has accepted a full scholarship from Texas Tech, ranked 12th in the nation by Baseball America.

Muncy, 19, batted .373 for the Pirates and set school records with 27 stolen bases and a 22-game hitting streak. He played at Moorpark College last season after transferring from Arizona State.

The Kansas City Royals drafted Muncy a year ago and have until one week before the June draft to sign him. Muncy was drafted in 1991 out of Camarillo High by the New York Yankees in the 10th round, and he turned down a sizable bonus to attend Arizona State.

Muncy played second base at Ventura but said that Texas Tech recruited him as a shortstop, the position he played in high school.

Baseball

Eric Johnson, Cal Lutheran’s senior left fielder, has been selected most valuable player in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference by a vote of coaches.

Johnson, a senior from Chatsworth High, led SCIAC hitters with a .431 average and batted at a .478 clip in 20 conference games.

Joe Cascione, Chris Fick, Jeff Berman and Pat Norville also were first-team all-conference selections. Cascione, the Kingsmen’s second baseman, batted .376. Fick, the designated hitter, batted .373. Berman, a right-hander, has a 1.66 earned-run average and a record of 8-2. Norville, a left-hander, is 7-1 with a 3.10 ERA.

Shortstop Gabe Diaz, outfielder Carlos Cardenas, first baseman Scott Sebbo and pitcher Mike Winslow were selected to the second team.

Cal Lutheran (29-7) remained the top-ranked NCAA Division III team this week in balloting by the American Baseball Coaches Assn. The Kingsmen will find out Sunday who their opponent will be in the West Regional, beginning May 21.

The Master’s College (28-20) will play top-seeded Azusa Pacific (33-7-1) on Thursday at 3 p.m. in the opening round of the NAIA District 3 baseball tournament at Azusa Pacific. The winner of the double-elimination tournament, which concludes Saturday, will advance to the NAIA Area I tournament, May 20-22, at a site to be determined.

Dan O’Sullivan, Darin Brebes and Chris Beck of The Master’s have been named first-team All-NAIA District 3 selections.

O’Sullivan, a junior catcher, led district players with 13 home runs and a .403 batting average. Brebes, a senior shortstop, batted .316 and was fifth among district hitters with 40 runs batted in. Beck, a junior right-hander, had a 2.74 earned-run average in 98 2/3 innings with 89 strikeouts and a record of 9-3.

Softball

Cal Lutheran (25-9-1) will play host to La Verne and Buena Vista in the three-team NCAA Division III West Regional on Friday and Saturday.

The Regals, ranked 11th in the nation, will open against 15th-ranked La Verne (28-8) on Friday at 11 a.m. The loser will meet second-ranked Buena Vista (29-6) on Friday at 1 p.m. The winner of the first game will play Buena Vista at 3 p.m. in the double-elimination tournament.

The championship game is scheduled to be played Saturday at 10 a.m. A second game at 3:30 p.m. will be played if necessary.

Football

Ventura and Buena highs will play an alumni football game July 17 at Ventura High.

Alumni from the class of 1989 or before are eligible to play. Each roster will be limited to 75 players. Entry fee is $50 and includes a barbecue the day after the game. Deadline for sign-ups is June 11.

Miscellany

A benefit basketball game will be played at Royal High on June 5 to raise money for Simi Valley resident Troy Hurt. Hurt, 21, needs bone marrow transplant surgery to combat a Wilms’ tumor, a rare form of cancer. Without the operation, which costs $250,000, Hurt could die within a year.

In the charity event, former Burroughs High and UCLA basketball player Lynn Shackelford will play on a team from the city’s parks and recreation department against the L.A. Breakers, a dwarf basketball team.
