OXNARD : Protest Expected Over Ending Adult Classes

Students protesting the elimination of Oxnard’s adult education program are expected to show up en masse tonight at a meeting of the Oxnard Union High School District.

Organizers of the protest expect as many as 500 students to attend the 7 p.m. meeting at district headquarters at 309 S. K St.

The district plans to cancel adult education because a new state law, which limits the amount of money a district can charge adult education programs for overhead such as maintenance and utilities, will result in a shortfall of nearly $650,000 during the 1993-94 school year, district officials said.

Oxnard’s adult schools serve more than 29,000 students, including 17,000 who take English as a Second Language.

Last Saturday, a rally to save the program drew more than 200 people, organizers said.

The planned protest overshadows another important district issue on tonight’s agenda: turning Oxnard High into a year-round school.

The district is recommending conditional approval of the year-round school measure but wants further study before final approval.

The district is asking the board of trustees to set up a committee with students, faculty and parents to review the proposal and issue a report by Oct.15.
