PacTel to Offer Digital Cellular Service in L.A. in 1995: The new service should markedly increase the conversation-carrying capacity of the company’s network, relieving some of the congestion that has plagued the service locally. Later this year, rival L.A. Cellular will turn on its digital service. To use either new service, consumers will have to purchase new cellular phones built to handle digital signals.
