In the first stage, Wiebren Veenstra emerged from a pack of about a dozen riders and easily sprinted to the Netherlands’ second successive victory in the 57.6-mile, Dover-to-Wilmington road race in 2:25:38.

The U.S. national team lost one rider before the time trial began when Kevin Livingston of Glencoe, Mo., crashed under his own team car during training. Livingston had an apparent pelvis injury. His race status is undetermined.
