College Trustees Ban Smoking in Buildings
Smokers are now prohibited from lighting up inside buildings at Ventura, Moorpark and Oxnard colleges, officials said.
The Ventura County Community College Board of Trustees imposed a new policy this week that forbids smoking inside campus buildings and college vehicles.
“I think everybody’s recognizing that secondhand smoke isn’t good,” said John Tallman, vice chancellor of instructional services for the district.
People are still allowed to smoke in open areas on the three campuses, Tallman said.
The new order replaces a policy that had allowed people to smoke in their offices, Tallman said. The policy was changed because staff members at Ventura College had complained that smoke from adjoining rooms was filtering into their offices, Tallman said.
The new policy has not caused any problems yet, Tallman said. “Most people go outside to smoke anyway.”
