Gabriela Sabatini, surrounded by extra security in the wake of the attack on Monica Seles, opened defense of her Italian Open title with 6-0, 6-2 victory over Claire Wegink of the Netherlands.
Sabatini said she didn’t think about the Seles incident during her victory but acknowledged that “you get a little scared. It could happen any time.”
