NATIONAL LEAGUE ROUNDUP : Rockies Outlast Cubs, Sosa in Wild Slugfest, 14-13

The Colorado Rockies won a wild one at Chicago on Tuesday night, surviving two dramatic home runs by Sammy Sosa to defeat the Chicago Cubs, 14-13, in 11 innings.

Sosa hit a three-run homer with two outs in the ninth inning, capping a five-run rally and tying it, 10-10. He had a two-run shot during a three-run 11th, making him five for six, but the Cubs still fell short.

Jim Tatum hit the first grand slam in Colorado history, connecting during a six-run eighth inning that gave the Rockies a 10-5 lead. Joe Girardi, Jerald Clark and Charlie Hayes also homered for the Rockies in a game that was scoreless entering the fifth inning.

In the 11th, Clark had a two-run double. An error by shortstop Jose Vizcaino allowed two more runs to score.

The Cubs finished with 21 hits, including a double by Sosa, and the expansion Rockies had 17.

Willie Blair (1-0) was the winner and Chuck McElroy (1-1) took the loss.

Atlanta 3, Pittsburgh 2--Mark Lemke doubled off the pitching shoulder of the Pirates’ Tim Wakefield in the sixth inning at Pittsburgh, driving in two runs in support of winning pitcher Tom Glavine.

Lemke’s sharp one-hopper ricocheted off Wakefield’s right shoulder and into short left field, allowing Ron Gant and Sid Bream to score. Gant had opened the inning with a walk and moved to third on Bream’s double.

Glavine (4-0) improved his lifetime regular-season record against the Pirates to 11-5.

Wakefield was not injured on the play but, as a former minor league infielder, was angry at not making it.

Florida 9, Cincinnati 6--Orestes Destrade drove in five runs for the Marlins and Chris Hammond survived two homers by the Reds at Miami.

Destrade hit a three-run homer during Florida’s four-run first inning against Tim Pugh (2-2). Destrade singled home a run in the fourth and drove in another with a bases-loaded groundout in the fifth.

The home run was only the second for Destrade, who averaged almost 40 while playing the last four seasons in Japan.

Hammond (1-3) gave up a grand slam by Chris Sabo and a two-run homer by Joe Oliver. Cincinnati traded Hammond to Florida in March after Pugh bumped him from the rotation.

Bryan Harvey pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings for his eighth save.

St. Louis 6, Houston 1--Bob Tewksbury pitched a six-hitter and had a two-run single at St. Louis.

Tewksbury (2-3) has won his last two starts after losing his first three decisions. A career .126 hitter, he has had a two-run single in each of the last two games.

Tewksbury struck out three and walked one, only his second of the season in 32 2/3 innings. It was the first complete game of the season for a Cardinal pitcher and Tewksbury’s first since last Aug. 31.

The Cardinals battered Astro starter Pete Harnisch (2-1) for nine hits and six runs, five earned, in 4 2/3 innings.

Montreal 6, San Diego 1--Dennis Martinez pitched a five-hitter at Montreal as the Expos ended a three-game losing streak.

Larry Walker and Moises Alou each had two-run singles in support of Martinez (2-4), who struck out four and walked two for his first complete game of the season.

Greg Harris (1-5) gave up seven hits and three walks and struck out three in four-plus innings.

Philadelphia 4, San Francisco 3--A two-run home run by David Hollins in the 12th inning at San Francisco helped the Phillies improve their best-in-the-majors record to 19-6.
