Nationalization

A letter writer (April 14) contends that policies pushed in the United States are socialized. May I point out that some programs are nationalized, but nationalization is not socialism. The U.S. is a capitalist country with a welfare program.
Moreover, socialism did not destroy the Russian economy. Socialism did not exist in Russia. The economy was destroyed by the so-called socialism of an undemocratic, incompetent, repressive regime.
Democratic socialism is a system of social justice through the collective ownership of industry and natural resources and the public control of production, distribution and services.
