The California Beach Party attracted about 2,000 more people this year compared to last year, Ventura officials said Thursday.

Ventura’s biggest special event of the year drew about 25,600 people last weekend, said Faye Campbell, special events coordinator for the city.

Entertainment included ‘50s-style rock bands, a “sock hop,†art exhibits, and bodybuilding and surfing competitions. This year, a classic car show was added to the event.

“We always had bigger crowds when it was free,†said Campbell, adding that she was nonetheless pleased with the turnout. She said the city made at least $10,000 from the event, but specific figures are not yet available.

Two years ago, city officials began charging $5 admission to the event, leading to an immediate drop in attendance, Campbell said. This year, attendance rose even though admission increased to $5.50.
