STANTON : Interim Manager Appointed by City

The City Council appointed Stephen B. Julian, former city manager of San Juan Capistrano, to serve as interim city manager. He replaces Terry Matz, who resigned last month to manage the city of Agoura Hills.

Julian will work until the city finds a permanent replacement for Matz, according to city officials. The council decided Tuesday to postpone selection of a search firm to replace Matz, and council members said they want to discuss the search with Julian.

Julian, 52, who works as a consultant to business and government and lives in San Juan Capistrano, was selected by the council from five applicants. He will be paid $7,500 a month. He served as city manager of San Juan Capistrano from 1981 to 1992.

In other business, the council gave the Orange County Sheriff’s Department more patrolling flexibility.

Sheriff’s Capt. Robert Eason told the council that currently the number of deputies on each shift is fixed but that sometimes not all the officers are needed. He recommended that the council authorize a new plan that would let him schedule the 11 deputies as needed.

On busy weekends, the city could have six deputies working the afternoon shift, instead of the regular five, Eason said. The alternative plan would cost roughly the same amount of money, he said.

Eason also said he is developing a neighborhood patrol program for next year.
