VALLEY AREA ROUNDUP : The Master’s Wins, Loses, Ties a School Record

Matt Henzie drove in the winning run with a single in the bottom of the seventh inning to lead The Master’s College baseball team to a 9-8 victory over Point Loma Nazarene Monday in the first game of an NAIA District 3 doubleheader at Newhall. The Mustangs lost the second game, 5-1.

The Mustangs (26-20, 13-8 in district) tied the school record for victories in a season, set in 1991.

The Master’s took a 6-0 lead in the first game, but Point Loma Nazarene got even with six runs in the fourth and fifth innings. It was 8-8 when Henzie delivered his second hit of the game, driving home the winning run.

Sam Minyard (3-3) pitched a complete game, earning the victory for The Master’s.

The Mustangs managed only three hits in the second game.

HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL

Grant 10, North Hollywood 3--Vanessa Zapata and Sylvia De La Rosa had two hits apiece for the Lancers (7-4, 4-2) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Grant.

Quartz Hill 5, Palmdale 2--Catcher Lolita Allen tripled, doubled and had two runs batted in to lead the Rebels (12-5, 8-1) in a Golden league game at Quartz Hill.

Sylmar 10, Van Nuys 6--Patti Moran had six stolen bases, giving her 15 in her past three games, leading the Spartans (14-4, 6-0) to a Valley Pac-8 Conference victory at Sylmar. Van Nuys is 3-8, 0-6.

Chaminade 8, Harvard-Westlake 0--Kaylene Boldroff pitched a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts, leading the Eagles (10-7, 4-3) in a Mission League game. Harvard is to 4-7, 0-6.

MEN’S TENNIS

Pierce 8, Cuesta 1--The Brahmas (17-0, 12-0) finished Western State Conference play undefeated with a victory at San Luis Obispo. Pierce plays Golden West today in the first round of regional playoffs at 2 p.m. at Long Beach.
