Melissa Lord of La Canada and Adam Jacobsen of Crescenta Valley were honored by The Times as the Glendale-area girls’ and boys’ high school basketball players of the year at an awards breakfast Sunday at the Holiday Inn in Pasadena.

Lord, a 6-foot senior, won the award for the second consecutive season. She finished her high school career as La Canada’s single-season and all-time scoring leader.

Jacobsen, a 6-3 senior, finished his career as the Southern Section’s all-time three-point shooter. Jacobsen, who transferred to Crescenta Valley from Glendora, led the Falcons to the semifinals of the Southern Section playoffs.

Marc Ward of Crescenta Valley was named girls’ coach of the year. John Goffredo of Crescenta Valley was the boys’ coach of the year.

Nine other boys and nine girls also received their awards for selection to The Times’ All-Glendale team.

The Marshall High boys’ volleyball team continues to roll. The Barristers are 10-0 (7-0 in the Northern Conference) after victories over Verdugo Hills and Hollywood.

Setter Darry Tse averaged 37 assists and three aces a match. Swing hitter Eli Brueggemann is averaging 13 kills a match. Middle blocker Tim Surette averages four blocks and has a kill percentage of .725.

Marshall, the City Section 3-A Division runner-up behind Venice, plays Verdugo Hills Monday.

Linebackers Paul Lopez, Victor Huezo and lineman Tony McCall of Crescenta Valley will play for a Southern California all-star football team that will battle a Hawaiian all-star team July 1 in Honolulu.

The three players helped led the Falcons to the Southern Section Division II semifinals.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

The Glendale College baseball team entered the week looking to break a four-game losing streak that included Western State Conference defeats by Ventura, Pierce and Los Angeles Valley.

The Vaqueros went into Tuesday’s WSC home game against Cuesta with a 14-16 record. They were 9-13 in conference play.

Glendale plays at College of the Canyons today and plays host to Santa Monica on Saturday.

Robert Nelson of Glendale broke his school record in the steeplechase by finishing second in a race against runners from four-year universities at the Mt. San Antonio College Relays.

Nelson finished in 8 minutes, 53 seconds, to break his record of 8:57:4

Glendale’s Luis Jacobs also competed in the event, finishing in a personal-best 9:35.

The Glendale men’s and women’s tennis teams begin competition today in the annual Ojai tournament, which features hundreds of players competing at the high school, community college and university levels.

COLLEGES

The Occidental baseball team entered the week 14-12-2 and 8-7 in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference after winning two of three conference games against Pomona Pitzer.

Junior outfielder Stewart Kramer hit his 12th double to establish a school single-season record. Kramer has eight home runs, three shy of the school record set by Dan Esquerra in 1984.

Jason Bradshaw helped Occidental win the series opener, 4-3, with a home run in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Occidental plays host to Claremont in the first game of a three-game SCIAC series.

Occidental will play host to a benefit volleyball match between the Los Angeles Police Department and a team from the St. Petersburg (Russia) Police Department Saturday at 2 p.m.

Actor Robert Stack and former pro basketball player Keith Erickson are the celebrity hosts for the event, which is sponsored by the Los Angeles-St. Petersburg Sister City Committee.

Shane Gerard, Marshall--Gerard, a senior right-hander, earned the victory by pitching a three-hitter against Verdugo Hills, the Barristers’ first victory in Northern Conference play.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF WEEK

Robert Nelson, Glendale--Nelson, a sophomore, broke his school record in the steeplechase by finishing second against runners from four-year universities at the Mt. San Antonio College Relays.

Nelson is a graduate of Muir High in Pasadena.

A golf tournament sponsored by the chambers of commerce in La Canada-Flintridge, Montrose-Verdugo City and Crescenta Valley will be played May 24 at the La Canada-Flintridge Country Club.
