VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP : Whittier Christian Sweeps Calvary Chapel
Whittier Christian handed host Calvary Chapel its first Olympic League loss with a 15-12, 15-8, 15-6 sweep Tuesday.
Whittier Christian (10-0, 5-0) is the two-time defending Southern Section Division III champion, having beaten Calvary Chapel in both section finals.
Calvary Chapel Coach Chuck Wright was not vexed by his team’s performance. He said perhaps his team got a dose of reality.
“I hope they finally understand we’ve been overrated this whole time,” Wright said. “We haven’t been tested much.”
Calvary Chapel (9-1, 4-1) had a porous defense relying mainly on towering brothers Philip and Robert Schildts to force side outs and knock opponents over with powerful spikes.
Whittier Christian, on the other hand, had a balanced attack.
Derek Beard and John Habben led the offense, with 18 and 12 kills, and Jason Hyde anchored the defense. Hyde even dug a ball from his back, which Wright called “one of the greatest plays I’ve ever seen.”
Setter Chris Kiefe, who set for the junior varsity last year but has only been setting the last four league matches, kept things running smoothly.
“I gave them a challenge,” Whittier Christian Coach Dave Herron said. “To try and come in and win in three (games). And they didn’t let each other down.”
