Unocal and Partners Announce Yemen Oil Strike: The Los Angeles-based oil company said that a test well at the new discovery in central Yemen produced 12,000 barrels a day of crude. The company expects to begin producing 120,000 barrels a day by September. Unocal owns a 28.57% stake in the East Shabwa area well, which is operated by Total, the French oil company. Total has a 28.57% stake in the prospect.

Unocal--Because of an erroneous wire report, The Times reported in Thursday’s editions that Unocal Corp. and Total, a French oil company, had specific production expectations for a joint-venture oil discovery in central Yemen. In fact, the oil companies plan further testing to confirm that the East Shabwa-area well is worth commercial development.
