COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Heavy-Hitting Northridge Sweeps San Diego State in Softball

Beth Calcante and Tamara Ivie each hit two home runs as host Cal State Northridge set one school record and tied another in sweeping San Diego State in a Western State Conference softball doubleheader Saturday.

Northridge (28-3-1), the No. 2-ranked team in the nation, hit a combined total of five home runs in the 3-1 and 8-0 victories to raise its season total to 25, a school record and the most in the nation this season. The previous school mark of 20 was set by last year’s team in 71 games.

Calcante, a junior from Newbury Park High, hit a solo home run in the first game and a two-run shot in the second to give her seven this season and 21 in her career, ninth all-time among NCAA Division I players.

Both of Ivie’s home runs came in the second game, a two-run shot in the first inning and a solo blast in the third.

The five homers tied the Northridge record for most in a doubleheader, and Ivie’s two in the second game tied her with Calcante (twice) for most in a game.

Amy Windmiller (13-2) and Kathy Blake (10-1) picked up the victories for Northridge.

Windmiller pitched a six-hitter and struck out eight in the first game, and Blake threw a two-hitter, struck out one and walked one in the second, which was called after six innings because of the eight-run rule.

In other women’s softball games:

Ventura tournament: Antelope Valley, led by Heather Meyer with a no-hitter, won all three of its games and is seeded first in today’s single-elimination round.

Antelope Valley (23-4) opened with a 5-0 victory over Cerritos. Angie LePage struck out 15 and pitched a three-hitter in a game shortened to six innings because of time constraints.

Meyer (10-2) shackled San Diego Mesa, 4-0, in the second game, striking out seven and allowing only one runner, on a walk.

In the third game, a 3-2 win over Chaffey, the Marauders overcame a 2-0 first-inning deficit with three runs in the fourth. Cheree Rogers drove in the winning run with a single. LePage (13-2) pitched her second three-hitter of the day and struck out seven.

BASEBALL

Cal Lutheran 14-14, La Verne 0-4--Pete Martin hit a two-run homer and Gabe Diaz a three-run double during a 10-run third inning in the first game, and Eric Johnson drove in four runs in the second game as the Kingsmen (21-4, 12-0 in the SCIAC) swept a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at Cal Lutheran.

Ventura 8, Santa Monica 6--The Pirates (10-13, 8-11 in Western State Conference play) scored five runs in the fifth inning for a 7-3 lead en route to a conference victory over visiting Santa Monica.

It marked a milestone for Ventura Coach Gary Anglin, who notched his 300th victory. Anglin’s record at Ventura is 300-242.

Mike Muncy went three for four with three runs batted in for Ventura, and Chris Mace and Ryan Denger each went two for three.

Marco Grajales relieved starter Tighe Curran (3-5) in the eighth and picked up his fifth save.

Valley 5, Cuesta 3--Behind the complete game of sophomore right-hander Willie Rivera (6-1), who had seven strikeouts and gave up three walks and seven hits, the Monarchs (13-11-1, 12-6-1) won the WSC game over the visiting Cougars. Rivera gave up three runs in the first four innings before settling down.

David Stevenson extended his hitting streak to 19 games, going two for two with a double and a single, and he also scored a run. Ozzie Areu went three for four with three runs, and Vic Seper was two for four with one RBI for the Monarchs.

With one out in the eighth inning, Areu tripled to right center. Stevenson was intentionally walked, stole second base, and Areu scored on the errant throw by the Cougar catcher to break a 3-3 tie. Seper then singled to right to drive in Stevenson.

Mission 8, Compton 6--The Free Spirit (19-7, 10-2 in the Southern California Athletic Conference) won their third consecutive game.

Frankie Medina was four for four with three RBIs and two doubles. Pitcher Rod Arancibia (2-0) worked three innings of one-hit relief for the victory.

MEN’S TRACK

Sun Angel Track Classic--Senior Garrett Noel and sophomore Derek Scurry of Cal State Northridge won the men’s javelin and long jump, respectively, in the meet at Arizona State.

Noel, who finished eighth in the javelin in last year’s NCAA championships, came from behind to win with a throw of 241 feet 5 inches in the sixth--and final--round.

Scurry, the school record-holder in the indoor long jump (26-3 1/2), added the outdoor record to his resume with a leap of 26-0 3/4, breaking the mark of 25-10 1/4 set by Chris Perry in 1990.
