PLATFORM : Daughters at Work

C. SHANNON JENKINS, president and chief executive of TouchStone Software Corp. in Huntington Beach, comments on "Take Our Daughters to Work" day April 28, a Ms. Foundation for Women project aimed at girls 9 to 15:

A few years back, I was working at another company and I happened to be the first woman in a serious management position. Some of the middle managers would approach me and say something like, “I have this daughter, she’s starting college and I see how successful you are. Could we go to lunch sometime? I’d really like to have my daughter meet you.â€

In other environments, these would seem to be real gruff, conservative, old-fashioned guys, yet when it came to their own daughters, they would say, “I want the best for my daughter. I want my daughter to be able to support herself. I want my daughter to have a role model.â€

When I started out, I didn’t have any role models. I have found that people often don’t think about the obvious things when they’re choosing a career. Do you like to work inside or outside? Do you like to work with people or do you like to work with paper or computers? There’s nothing quite as graphic as visiting the workplace.
