LOS ANGELES COUNTY : Fate of Probation Camps Hinges on Federal Funding
The fate of 17 Los Angeles County probation camps for juvenile offenders will likely be decided in the next two weeks as county and state leaders attempt to seek funding from the federal government, officials said Thursday.
Gov. Pete Wilson told county officials Wednesday that the state would not provide Los Angeles County with $30 million to keep the camps open. County officials had said that without state money they would have to close the camps by May 1.
On Thursday, Board of Supervisors Chairman Ed Edelman and Chief Probation Officer Barry Nidorf said state officials had told them to wait two weeks before ordering the camps closed. Nidorf and Edelman said state officials believed that it was still possible to seek federal funding.
