Woody Allen

An article on March 19 said that Woody Allen said he was exonerated by a report of allegations that he sexually abused Mia Farrow’s adopted children. In that same edition, a letter to the editor agreed with a Platform by Thomas J. Gibbs Jr. that suggested a “parent license.”

California already licenses some parents. Social Services guidelines impose extensive scrutiny on foster and adoptive parents. That doesn’t prevent the almighty buck determining a “child’s best interests” with regard to adoptions by celebrities and other well-connected parents. Nor is there a way to predict who will be a good parent.

The same problems of living--immaturity, unexpected poverty, divorce--can turn even pre-screened licensed parents into child abusers.
