Student Held for Carrying Handgun
An 18-year-old Antelope Valley College freshman was arrested Wednesday for carrying a concealed handgun on the school’s campus, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.
Joseph Calhoun was taken into custody for carrying a .38-caliber semiautomatic handgun tucked in his waistband and on suspicion of cocaine possession, Deputy Marty Shearer said. Calhoun was being held in lieu of $35,000 bail.
Campus security noticed the gun while Calhoun was playing an arcade game in the school’s cafeteria about 10:30 a.m. Guards called the sheriff’s station, and three deputies grabbed Calhoun from behind without incident. A bag of what police believe was cocaine was discovered during the arrest, Shearer said.
