OAKLAND — Just as she has done before, Olympia Scott took control for Playa del Rey St. Bernard in the girls’ Division IV State championship game Friday at the Oakland Coliseum Arena.
Scott, a 6-foot-2 forward, scored 12 consecutive points in the third quarter in leading the Vikings to a 59-48 victory over Grass Valley Bear River. Scott had 24 points, 15 rebounds and five blocks.
She has done it before. After two defeats in the Santa Barbara tournament in December, Scott called a turning-point team meeting.
Friday, a 28-24 halftime deficit was the turning point, when Lori Pawinski, St. Bernard coach, told her team to go inside to use its height, and Scott spoke her mind. “I said that we had to slow down and set up the play, that we didn’t come here for nothing,” she said.
The Vikings (30-4) outscored the Bruins (32-3) in the third quarter, 16-3, to lead by nine.
