Debate Over National Health Care
As a “gonna quit” smoker, I agree with a cigarette tax; it will deter some young people and raise a pittance for the government. However, it is the height of hypocrisy for the government to pay the tobacco growers a tremendous subsidy for providing a health menace. If the subsidies were ended, the government would have a start on financing better health care. It doesn’t make sense to take a dollar or two from smokers and grant millions to growers.
