The Trouble With Teen Pregnancy

Your series on the ever-increasing numbers of teen-age pregnancies reminded me of the day I picked up a pregnant teen-ager who was waving frantically on a lonely road (thinking) maybe she needed a ride to the hospital.

“Have you any money, honey?” she asked right away.

She said she was living in a shack without utilities behind a friend’s house.

I asked about the baby’s father. She said she didn’t know who he was and she didn’t care.

“I really can’t wait to have the baby,” she said. “Then I can get more welfare, a good place to live, food stamps.”

On this morning, all she wanted was a ride to the beach.

As long as society continues to reward poor young girls, of course they will want babies and places of their own.
