PREP ROUNDUP : El Modena Wins in Ninth, Advances to Softball Final

Kristi Bolle scored from third on Mandy Villa’s bunt with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to lead El Modena to a 1-0 victory over Whittier La Serna Friday in a Brea-Olinda softball tournament semifinal at Brea-Olinda.
El Modena will meet Covina Charter Oak in the 4 p.m. championship game today at Brea-Olinda.
Alexis Beckman pitched a one-hitter with nine strikeouts for the Vanguards. Jacki DeBoard pitched a two-hitter with 11 strikeouts for La Serna.
In another tournament game:
Irvine 1, Esperanza 0 (9, tiebreaker)--Alleah Poulson hit a single over a drawn-in outfield to score Kim Fisher from third with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth for Irvine (2-1) in a consolation game. Rebecca Smith struck out eight and allowed only a fifth-inning single to Esperanza’s Stephanie Thompson.
In the Cypress softball tournament:
Foothill 2, Cerritos 1--Christina Mazurie hit an RBI triple in the first for the Knights (2-3). Foothill’s Amy Tessman earned the save getting the final two outs with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh.
In nonleague softball:
Capistrano Valley Christian 11, St. Margaret’s 0--Krissy Hazlett had three hits, three RBIs and three runs scored for Capistrano Valley Christian (1-2).
Tustin 2, Mission Viejo 1--Tied 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh, Sara Bray scored from third on a throwing error for host Tustin (3-0).
In nonleague baseball:
Buena Park 6, Lakewood Mayfair 0--Alfredo Garcia threw a four-hitter, and Greg Cabral hit a three-run home run for Buena Park (2-0).
St. Margaret’s 11, Capistrano Valley Christian 9--David Lambert had three home runs for Capistrano Valley Christian (2-2). Winning pitcher Rick Miller pitched a complete game for St. Margaret’s.
In nonleague boys’ swimming:
Los Alamitos 117, Long Beach Millikan 52--Freshman Tim Haney qualified for the Southern Section meet in both the 200 and 500 freestyles for the Griffins. Teammate Tim Campbell qualified for the Southern Section in the 100 breaststroke for Los Alamitos.
Santa Margarita 112, Laguna Beach 50--John Peterson set a school-record in the 100 backstroke (1:01.86) and Brendan Herlihy set another in the 200 freestyle (1:51.52) for host Santa Margarita. The 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams also set school records--1:36.64 and 3:42.36--for the Eagles.
