OUTLOOK
Kurz, who threw a four-hitter with six strikeouts against North Torrance in the 1992 season opener, is the heir apparent to former ace Shawn Albee on the pitching staff. “He’s developed a good slider to go with his fastball and breaking pitches,” Harrell said. “This is the deepest pitching staff in my six years here. We have eight pitchers who can throw well.” Jamie Surdock, who was 10-1 on the freshman-sophomore team and 7-2 on the junior varsity last year, will be the No. 2 pitcher. Belitz, 6 feet 1 and 200 pounds, will be the top reliever and power hitter. “He’s crushing the ball at the plate and throwing harder than anyone on the mound,” Harrell said. “He’s a big, strong left-hander who throws bullets.” Edison set a school record with only 39 errors in 25 games last season, and Harrell expects the defense to be strong again. Cancellieri, the fastest player on the team, will bat leadoff with a sophomore, Hanoian, batting second. “I’m hoping for a 20-win season,” Harrell said.
