McDonnell Douglas Settles: McDonnell Douglas Corp. agreed to a $20.1-million settlement of age bias complaints lodged by 900 St. Louis employees caught up in massive layoffs by the defense giant. In a complaint filed in federal court, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission claimed that McDonnell Douglas used age as a basis for its decision to lay off non-union workers who were 55 or older. The EEOC and the company also filed a consent decree for payments of $10 million to be divided among the employees. It also provides $10.1 million in pension enhancements and at least 200 jobs to be allocated among them. Officials noted that the company denies any wrongdoing and that the decree does not constitute a finding of wrongdoing.
