Record Number of Food Stamp Recipients: The number of people collecting food stamps reached a record 26.6 million in December, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said, citing the economy and the onset of winter. More than one American in 10 receives food stamps. The previous record was set in September, when victims of hurricanes in Florida, Hawaii and Louisiana and of Typhoon Omar in Guam pushed the number to 26.4 million, officials said. The latest increase occurred in all regions, but the highest rates were in the Mountain Plains, Northeast, Southwest and West.
