The only run Pierce’s Steve Pack gave up Thursday in a Western State Conference baseball game at Bakersfield was unearned, but it was enough to cost him the game as the Brahmas were unable to score.
Pack (1-1) scattered five singles, allowing the run in the fifth inning of a 1-0 contest.
Bakersfield’s Rene Gonzalez singled, stole second, advanced to third on a throwing error by catcher Adam Pearlman and scored on a squeeze bunt by Steve Rutherford.
Pack yielded only Gonzalez’s hit over the final five innings, retiring the last 14 batters in a row.
Bakersfield improved to 2-1 in conference play. Pierce is 2-4, 0-2.
Jason Cohen collected two of Pierce’s four hits, a double and single in four at-bats. Pearlman tripled to lead off the third but was stranded.
