A 14-year-old boy who found a pipe bomb on a Ventura sidewalk Wednesday notified police of his find, but not before carrying the device two blocks, authorities said.
The boy, whose name was not released, found the pipe bomb on the sidewalk at Arundell Avenue and Arundell Circle a little after 4 p.m., Ventura Police Sgt. Larry Lotton said.
The boy carried the device two blocks to the nearest phone to call police, Lotton said. Members of the sheriff’s bomb squad removed the object, which they said was a live pipe bomb, officials said.
In a prepared statement, Lotton urged the public not to approach or touch any object that might be a bomb, but instead to contact authorities immediately.
