Drug Ring Mailing Cocaine Greeting Cards Busted
AMSTERDAM, Netherlands — Police have broken up a drug ring that smuggled cocaine into the Netherlands in greeting cards mailed from South America.
Dutch customs officials became suspicious when 40 to 50 cards bearing the same two Dutch addresses arrived over several weeks from the former colony of Suriname, a notorious source of drugs reaching the Netherlands.
The cards were mailed by a blind woman, 44, who was arrested at Schiphol Airport last week as she stepped off a plane from Suriname, police said.
“The cards were the regular ‘Happy Birthday’ and ‘Congratulations’ type, only each one held 10 grams of cocaine,†he said.
Rameau said three suspects were detained and an unspecified quantity of heroin and cocaine seized in raids at two addresses in Amsterdam and Rotterdam.
