LOS ANGELES COUNTY : Supervisors Act to Protect Poor Children From Lead

County supervisors have approved measures designed to find and help poor youngsters with high levels of lead in their bloodstreams.
The board this week ordered publication of multilingual brochures, creation of a lead task force and establishment of “safe houses” for families when their residences have been identified with lead problems.
County public health nurses and environmental technicians will be reassigned to help treat Medi-Cal-eligible children who have been diagnosed with high lead levels. Lead has been linked to a number of health problems, including mental retardation.
