COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Jessie Propels Ventura Past Santa Barbara
Freshman Brandon Jessie had game-high totals of 27 points and 12 rebounds to lead Ventura College to a 66-42 victory over visiting Santa Barbara City in a Western State Conference North Division game Wednesday night.
The victory was the fifth in a row for Ventura (26-1, 2-0 in division play) and set up a first-place showdown Saturday against visiting Oxnard.
Jessie, a 6-foot-5 forward, made 12 of 15 field-goal attempts, including two of three from three-point range.
Ventura shot 53.7% (29 of 54) from the field and outrebounded the Vaqueros (12-14, 1-2), 34-15.
In other men’s games:
Oxnard 75, Cuesta 59--Lance Fay scored 14 of his game-high 19 points in the second half to help the Condors (16-8, 2-0) overcome a two-point halftime deficit in a WSC North Division game.
Valley 96, Canyons 82--Joe Mauldin scored 37 points, and Wayne Carlisle had 35 to lead the Monarchs to a WSC South Division upset. Mauldin made 12 of 18 shots from the field, and Carlisle hit 11 of 17, including five of eight from three-point range.
Cal Lutheran 99, Redlands 86--Paul Tapp scored 16 points, and Damon Ridley and Derrick Clark each had 15 for Cal Lutheran (13-3, 5-0 in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play).
WOMEN
Ventura 68, Santa Barbara 57--Cori Herman scored 19 points and made four of six three-point shots to lead the host Pirates (17-4, 3-0) to a WSC North Division victory.
Valley 71, Canyons 67--With nine seconds left in the WSC South Division game, Amy Horst (10 points, 15 rebounds) made two free throws for Valley (22-4, 3-0).
