In its first 14 games, the Cal State Northridge men’s basketball team suffered only one double-digit loss: 77-67, at Fresno State in its opener. But since a five-game winning streak evened its record at 7-7, the Matadors have dropped three in a row--losing by 13 at Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 15 at Boise State and 12 at Alabama Birmingham.

Men’s basketball: Andre Chevalier, a junior, has 80 assists this season and 313 in 73 games for Northridge, two shy of Troy Dueker’s school record in a career. Dueker set the record in 93 games over four seasons, from 1984-88. Chevalier also has 112 steals, eight short of tying the Northridge record held by Derrick Gathers, who did it in 53 games over two seasons, from 1988-90. . . .

Glendale guard Kenny Collins is a model of consistency. In two Western State Conference South Division games, he is averaging 18.0 points, his average for 18 games overall this season. . . .

Emeka Okenwa is ranked third among NAIA District 3 leaders in field-goal percentage at 60.2 and sixth in rebounding with an 8.1 average. Teammate David Humphreys is fourth in assists with an average of 5.3 per game. . . .

Damon Ridley of Cal Lutheran is first in steals in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with 3.9 per game and seventh in scoring with a 14.9 average. Teammates Dave Ulloa and Rupert Sapwell are tied for second in steals with an average of 3.1. Sapwell is second in rebounding average at 8.3 and Ulloa is tied for sixth in assists with a 3.6 average. Paul Tapp, a CLU junior from Burbank High, leads SCIAC players in three-point baskets with 43. Senior forward Kelly Crosby is third in free-throw shooting at 80.9% and former Royal High standout Jared Bryne is third in blocked shots with 19.

Women’s basketball: Canyons is the only WSC team to surpass 100 points in games this season. And the Cougars have done it twice--on both ends of the spectrum. At the Hancock tournament in December, Canyons lost to Lassen, 106-59, and then beat Victor Valley, 105-70. The Cougars average 64.6 points but give up 66.8. . . .

Northridge freshman Kris Waldorf is on pace to break the single-season school record for three-point baskets, 27, set last season by Cynthia Llerenas. Waldorf has 21 three-point baskets in 17 games, but only three two-point baskets. She has connected on 42.9% (21 of 49) of her three-point shots, on pace for third-best in a season. . . .

Northridge freshman Michelle Esparza has scored in double figures in eight of the past 11 games. In the first six games, Esparza scored only seven points. . . . Ten of CSUN’s 13 players have scored in double figures in at least one game. . . .

Moorpark forward Tamara Pacheco, who carries an 18.6-point average overall, is averaging 23.7 in seven conference games. . . .

The Master’s is 1-7 in NAIA District 3 competition, 5-11 overall, but Mustang freshman Audrey McMurray, a 5-foot-9 forward from San Bernardino, is leading conference players in scoring (17.3) and field-goal percentage (60.8). McMurray is fourth in rebounding with 8.3 per game. . . .

Evelyn Albert of CLU is second in the SCIAC in scoring with an 18.4 average. Her sister, Nicole Albert, is fifth with a 15.1 average, first in steals at 4.3 and third in three-point baskets with 15. Teammate Aimee Snider is second in the conference in free-throw shooting at 74.5% and third in assists with 3.5 a game.

Swimming: Heather Ballard and Denise Lamoureaux of Northridge each won two events against UC Irvine last weekend. Ballard finished in 4 minutes 36.41 seconds in the 400-yard individual medley and 5:06.81 in the 500 freestyle. Lamoureaux won the 100 freestyle and the 200 freestyle in 54.60 and 1:56.56, respectively.

Ian Wisler-Poulsen led the Matador men’s team with a season-best 9:53.66 in the 1,000 freestyle.

Tennis: Monica Kocain and Amy Marks of Northridge started off the season undefeated with the doubles No. 3 flight championship at the Cal State Los Angeles Invitational, defeating Westmont’s Karina Stucy and Marlene Baer, 6-4, 6-2.
