Cerritos : ABC Board, Home Builder to Negotiate on Project
ABC Unified School District officials have agreed to negotiate exclusively with an Orange County developer to build houses on property adjacent to Whitney High School.
The district hopes to lease or sell the 13 acres on Shoemaker Avenue as part of an asset management program designed to bring in extra money.
Warmington Homes specializes in building single-family homes ranging in price from $200,000 to $300,000.
Although ABC district officials and those at Warmington Homes would not discuss details, at least one board member who voted against the project said the district will not be able to maintain control of the land.
“I don’t think we’ll be able to lease,†Trustee David Montgomery said. “How many people are going to buy a home and have to give it up in 40 years? They almost have to have ownership of the land, and that’s what I’m against.â€
But board Vice President Jim Weisenberger said negotiations with Warmington Homes do not exclude leasing and will allow the district to raise money to buy science equipment and computer labs.
