LAGUNA BEACH — A 43-year-old Laguna Beach man tried to kill himself Saturday by dousing himself with gasoline and lighting it with a match, police said.
Jerry Williams’ clothes were slightly smoldering when police arrived about 5:30 p.m. at Main Beach and confronted him, said Sgt. Doris Weaver. Williams at first tried to walk away from the officers, but he stopped after officers told him to, Weaver said.
Officers said Williams apparently was despondent over personal problems. Officials did not elaborate.
Williams was flown in a medical helicopter to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where he was listed in critical condition.
Police did not find a note at the site where Williams doused his clothes with gasoline.
Williams suffered burns over his entire body.
