ORANGE — A 74-year-old man who was walking in a traffic lane was struck and fatally injured late Thursday, the California Highway Patrol said.
A driver going east on Villa Park Road tried to swerve around Vernon Rainey of Anaheim after seeing him in the roadway, the CHP said. But the vehicle struck Rainey, who was tossed over the hood and onto the roadway just west of Hewes Street, the CHP said.
Rainey was taken to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana and died shortly afterward.
It was not clear why he was walking in the road, CHP Officer Angel Johnson said.
The driver was not cited.
