A soldier pleaded guilty to murdering an award-winning TV news engineer while AWOL from the Army in 1991.
John Louis Rex, 23, entered the plea in Superior Court in exchange for prosecutors agreeing to drop a special circumstance allegation involving robbery. Rex faced life in prison without possibility of parole on the allegation.
The agreement calls for Rex to be sentenced to 30 years to life in prison. Sentencing was set for Feb. 4.
Rex was charged in the death of KCOP-TV engineer Jeff Webreck, a local Emmy winner. Webreck, 44, left the station the night of Sept. 4, 1991. His body was found three days later in a shallow grave in Angeles National Forest. He had been shot in the head.
