LOS ANGELES : City to Pay $5.7 Million to Remove DDT From Bay

The Los Angeles City Council agreed Tuesday to pay more than $5.7 million for a portion of the cleanup of Santa Monica Bay waters contaminated by the dumping of the pesticide DDT in the 1950s and 1960s.
The payment is one of the largest by more than 150 cities and special districts throughout Southern California that will pay a total of nearly $46 million to federal environmental agencies to clean up DDT dumped through sewage lines into the ocean off the Palos Verdes Peninsula.
Litigation is continuing against Montrose Chemical and other companies that were the original targets of a 1990 lawsuit by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
