FILLMORE : Teen-Ager Hurt in Head-On Collision

A 17-year-old Fillmore girl was in guarded condition at a hospital Tuesday after sustaining a broken pelvis in a head-on collision on a dark section of the Santa Paula Freeway.

Yesenia Molina was rushed to Santa Paula Memorial Hospital along with her brother, Patino, 6, and their mother, Emelia Martinez, who was driving the car. The driver of the car that hit them about 9 p.m. Monday on a stretch of road east of rural Timber Canyon Road was also taken to Santa Paula Memorial.

California Highway Patrol Officer David Webb said George White III of Sherman Oaks was released from the hospital after being treated for minor injuries sustained when his eastbound car veered into the westbound lane and hit Martinez’s car.

Martinez and her son were treated for minor injuries and released.

Webb said the CHP had not determined what caused White to veer into the westbound lanes. Neither driver appeared to be speeding at the time of the accident, the CHP said.

Webb said the section of the freeway where the accident occurred is notorious for its narrowness and poor lighting. However, the area was recently widened to four lanes, he said.

“It’s a lot better now,” Webb said. “There’s a lot more room to react out there.” But the area is “still very dangerous” because much of it is still two lanes, he said.
