PREP ROUNDUP : Mission Viejo Upsets Capistrano Valley in Girls’ Soccer

Colby Hale scored a first-half goal to help unranked Mission Viejo upset Capistrano Valley, the third-ranked girls’ soccer team in Orange County, 1-0, in a South Coast League game Monday at Mission Viejo High School.
Hale scored off a Lynnae Stoehr assist with one minute remaining in the first half, and goalie Kelly Farino made eight saves for Mission Viejo (5-6-3, 1-0 in league). Capistrano Valley is 12-3-2, 0-1.
In Century League girls’ soccer:
El Modena 1, Villa Park 0--Jennifer Porter scored off Brenda Hinrichs’ corner kick one minute into the game for host El Modena (9-2-1, 1-0), ranked ninth in the county. Villa Park is 0-1 in league.
In the Empire League:
El Dorado 5, Cypress 1--Sophomore Kelly Bogan scored three goals for host El Dorado (7-5, 1-0). Cypress is 7-3, 0-1.
In the Sea View League:
Corona del Mar 8, Saddleback 1--Megan Allison scored twice to lead Corona del Mar.
Santa Margarita 3, Newport Harbor 1--Erica DeVitis scored two first-half goals for host Santa Margarita (7-1-5, 3-0). Meggan Fleener scored for Newport Harbor (6-5, 1-1).
University 1, Tustin 0--Laura Watson assisted on Jenny Whiteley’s second-half goal for host University (3-4-1, 1-1-1). Tustin is 1-1 in league.
In the Sunset League:
Ocean View 2, Fountain Valley 1--Joleen Lewis and Gina Sanchez scored for visiting Ocean View (11-3-1, 2-0), ranked eighth in the county. Mindy Miller scored for Fountain Valley (5-4-5, 0-1-1).
In Garden Grove League boys’ basketball:
Kennedy 64, Pacifica 52--Paul Pappas scored 20 points, Pat Kunz 14 and Jeff Cummins 13 for host Kennedy (12-3, 3-0). Dean Vergara lead Pacifica (7-6, 1-2) with 20 points.
Rancho Alamitos 60, Bolsa Grande 59--With two seconds remaining, Edward Taylor threw a length-of-the-court pass to Marshall Brown, who made a layup to give Rancho Alamitos the victory. Taylor finished with 15 points, all on three-pointers, and Brown had 14 points for the Vaqueros (7-7, 3-0). Jason Dienhart and Justin Briggs scored 15 points each for Bolsa Grande (5-7, 0-3).
Garden Grove 72, La Quinta 66--Long Nguyen had 23 points for visiting Garden Grove (1-2 in league). Todd Snyder and Greg Greenfield had 15 each for La Quinta (4-8, 2-1).
In the Metro League:
Corona Christian 45, Pacific Shores 34--Chris Ross scored 15 points and Chris Mitchell had nine points and eight rebounds for host Pacific Shores (1-3, 0-1). Billy Taylor scored 22 points for Corona Christian (1-1 in league).
In a nonleague game:
Downey Life Christian 81, Heritage Christian 73--Steve Acheson scored 22 points for Heritage Christian (5-1).
In Garden Grove League girls’ basketball:
Kennedy 52, Pacifica 48 (OT)--Lynly Matsumoto had 15 points and eight steals for the host Fighting Irish (10-3, 3-0). Michelle Stark had 14 points for Pacifica (1-2 in league).
Santiago 45, Los Amigos 23--Yamala Olmedo had 18 points and nine rebounds and America Robledo had 14 points for host Santiago (10-2, 3-0). Carmela Zavala scored 14 points for Los Amigos (1-10, 0-3).
Garden Grove 67, La Quinta 48--Michol Murray scored 20 points and Stephanie Werdal added 19 for Garden Grove (6-7, 1-2). La Quinta (8-3, 1-2) got 19 points from Ronnie Gondringer.
