A Newbury Park father and son were safe at home Monday after they got lost while hiking in the Santa Monica Mountains, police said.
Dennis Love, 50, and his son, Jason Love, 15, became lost shortly after 6 p.m. Sunday when they went off a trail in the dark near South Potrero Road in Newbury Park, said Sgt. Earl Matthews, search-and rescue coordinator for the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department.
The elder Love used a cellular phone that had been a Christmas gift to telephone a friend, who in turn called police, said Sheriff’s Sgt. Steven Bourke.
State park rangers found the pair about four hours later in about 60 yards of deep brush, Matthews said.
“They were cold, shivering, hungry and pretty embarrassed, but they were fine,” Matthews said.
