Meet the New Patrons, Same as the Old Patrons
Your article mentioned Esa-Pekka Salonen, music director of the L.A. Philharmonic, as one person who might bring the youth on board in appreciation of orchestral music. It is not only the age factor causing the audience to decline in Los Angeles; it is also the distance the community feels from the musical Establishment.
Two months ago I wrote Salonen at the Philharmonic to suggest that he might have Leonid Kuzmin, an extremely talented young pianist, play with the Philharmonic.
I did not even receive a courtesy response from a secretary. What does this tell you about the musical Establishment of which Salonen is a member?
