Culver City : Drive-In’s Lease Extended
The Studio Drive-In theater, long targeted for closure and redevelopment, will continue screening movies at dusk at least through February.
The Culver City Redevelopment Agency plans to develop the 11-acre facility into a residential complex but the project is not ready to move forward, said Margaret Liu, redevelopment project manager.
The single-screen drive-in at 5250 Sepulveda Blvd. is the last such theater on the Westside. Single-screen outdoor theaters cannot compete with multiscreen indoor theaters and their state-of-the-art sound systems, Liu said.
Nationwide Theater Corp. was granted an extension of its lease, which was to expire today. The new month-to-month lease requires a 90-day cancellation notice and cannot be terminated before Feb. 28. The agency charges $1,000 per month for rent.
