Voodoo To-Do

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy will keep the new year revelry going Saturday night when the band plays at the Bermuda Triangle in downtown Ventura.

Two-thirds of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy--guitarist Scott Morris and singer-bassist Russ Davis--used to be half of Durango 95. Along with drummer Kurt Sodergren, Big Bad is no Durango 47 1/2. This isn’t a pop-rock band.

“We want to be like Tom Waits, Jimi Hendrix and Duke Ellington sitting in a Jacuzzi naked, drinking a bourbon,†Davis said in a recent interview. No Jacuzzis at the Bermuda Triangle, so far, but bourbon and pool.

Big Bad does rootsy swamp rock featuring some powerhouse vocals by Davis. Also, Morris is one of the best guitarists around these parts.

The band does mostly originals, but covers by Hendrix, Waits, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins and a hot version of “I’m Shakin†by the Blasters. It’s worth the drive just to hear that one.

And it’s worth it to note that the venue promises to take up the slack for the late, lamented Charlie’s by offering music every night of the week starting soon. Bermuda Triangle is at 477 E. Main St. Call 653-0466.
