Thousand Oaks High withstood an exhilarating performance by Ventura guard Darien Roberts to muscle its way to an 87-82 victory in the final of the Ventura tournament Wednesday night.

Roberts, a 6-foot-2 senior, tied a school record with 40 points--32 in the second half--and grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.

But it was the Lancers (10-1), with an overpowering front line of twins Paul and Nick Foster (both 6-7) and Jason Hartman (6-6), who took control down the stretch of a game in which the lead changed hands 11 times in the first three quarters.

All told, Thousand Oaks outrebounded Ventura, 39-30.

“It was tough under (the basket),†Hartman, a junior forward, said. “Roberts went off on us, but they couldn’t match up with us. We found the open guy inside.â€

Roberts scored 15 of his team’s 19 third-quarter points and 17 in the fourth quarter. He hit four three-point shots, including one with less than two minutes to play to bring Ventura (8-2) to within 81-80.
